- What is T8 Lighting? What are the Benefits?
An Introduction to T8 Lighting
T8 lighting is a fluorescent type of lighting that is used in warehouses, offices and homes. The energy-efficient light supplies soft yet bright lighting for a lower cost. Dimensionally, the tubes that are used for T8 lighting are thinner than the traditional T12 fixtures, although both bulbs, on average, are sized four feet in length and are designed with a bi-pin base. Nevertheless, you can also find the lamps available in other lengths as well, including 1, 2, 3, and 8 foot-sized tubes.
Why T8 Lighting is Replacing T12 Lamps
T12 lamps have been considered a standard commercial fluorescent light for the past several decades. However, because they are not as energy efficient as T8 lighting, T8 lamps are being used instead. While T8 lamps generally emit 32 watts of power, T12 fluorescents use around 40 watts of current at a time. That’s because the ballasts on T8 fluorescent lamps limit the electrical flow so that the T8 lamps conserve more energy.
T8 Lamps Lose Less of their Brightness Over Time
In addition, T8 fluorescent bulbs lose less of their brightness over time too. T8s usually sacrifice about 10% of their intensity after a couple years while T12s may forfeit as much as 20% over the same length of time.
T8 Bulbs – Both Energy Efficient and Bright
Many people may think that because the T8 lamp is more energy-efficient that it produces a weaker light. However, T8 bulbs are just as bright as their less energy-friendly T12 counterparts. So, from a cost and use standpoint, you are better off buying T8 bulbs.
T8 Full Spectrum Lighting
T8 lighting is also offered in full spectrum lighting, or lighting that is mimics the light of the sun. As a result, this kind of T8 illumination can be a cure for the winter blues, also known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD. As SAD is caused by a lack of sunlight, using T8 full spectrum lighting in your office, warehouse, or factory can actually motivate your employees to be more productive, especially during the fall and winter months.
Use the Lighting to Grow Plants
In addition, because T8 full spectrum lighting is similar in nature to solar light, you can use the fluorescent bulbs in a greenhouse or in your home as a grow light for your plants. The lighting, too, causes less glare and therefore is easier on the eyes, which, in turn, encourages more productivity as well.
T8 Bulbs Last a Long, Long Time
T8 lighting maintains an average life span of around 20,000 hours. Therefore, bulbs can last as long as a half of a decade and, in some instances, even longer. Needless to say, T8 lighting is a healthful type of illumination, not only for your pocketbook but for your disposition and level of comfort too.
